The problem with exceptions

If 90% of the people fail the 10% are the exceptions;

If 80% of the people are wrong, the 20% are the exceptions.

If most startups close within 3 years, the successes are the exceptions.

When you look at the numbers and realize it’s only the true exceptions who are going to overcome the odds, it’s easy to wonder why people would take the type of risks they do.

The reason is quite simple, most of us consider ourselves to be “the exception”. The problem with this thinking is, by definition, most of us can’t be the exception, if we all were the exception…it wouldn’t be the exception.

It’s wonderful people are willing to take chances. Without risk takers, we wouldn’t have much progress but it’s also important to understand we all can’t be the exception and to think otherwise is foolish.

Have a great day!
