It’s important to understand what motivates people and not to assume that everyone’s motivation is the same as yours.

As an example, I was speaking to a business person who is wanting to walk away from an opportunity because it didn’t fall within his mission of wanting to make the world a better place. The fact that this person could make some money with this opportunity was offset by the loss of opportunity for more meaningful projects.

Another person was considering walking away from a project that was profitable because he wasn’t having fun. He had plenty of other ways to make money so was debating walking away from something in search of another project that might be fun.

In both cases the people they were negotiating with didn’t understand that money wasn’t their only motivation so the more they argued their cases, the less impact they were having because of a misunderstanding of people’s motivation.
