When looking at standings we frequently look to see how far someone is from the top. If they are first or second, that seems good. If they are lower then that, this isn’t as good.

It’s just as important to find out how far someone is from the bottom.

As an example, someone who finished 5th out of 6th might not seem so impressive. On the other hand, if someone finishes 5th out of 1000, that seems much more impressive.

Ideally we should only be comparing ourselves to our limits but in reality, we do live in a competitive world and unless you feel everyone should get a participation award, you need to look at both how far you are from the top as well as how far you are from the bottom.
