Founders of companies tend to get forced into roles beyond their competencies.
The founder who is a great scientist ends up spending too much time worrying about HR issues, financial issues etc and doesn’t spend much time doing what he does best.
As soon as is viable, it’s best to promote people downward so they can focus on what they do best.
The scientist/founder should be promoted to Chief Science Officer, which allows him to continue to make great progress, while allowing others to do the jobs he isn’t great at, or which doesn’t utilize his time effectively.
Why isn’t this done more often? One reason is ego. To go from President, or CEO to Chief Science Officer might seem like it’s a demotion but in reality it’s just allocating resources better. When everyone puts their ego to the side and tries to figure out what is best for the organization as a whole, great things can happen.
