Overcoming someone else’s first impression

We all know how important it is to make a first impression. Just think about how difficult it is to overcome someone else’s first impression.

What does that mean? We would like to think when we meet someone for the first time we have the opportunity to make a good first impression but what happens when their first impression of you is influenced by a previous impression of someone else?

As an example, if you meet someone for the first time and they tell you they are a used car salesman you probably have a preconception of who they are based on what they do. Or, if someone tells you they are a brain surgeon you probably have an idea in your head of what they are like.

While we would all like to be able to have a blank slate to make our own first impression it’s important to understand that this isn’t always the case. Be aware of peoples preconception based on what you do, who you know or something else. It’s the only way to be prepared to overcome someone else’s first impression.

Have a great day!
