Up sell to no sale

Salespeople are taught to up sell. The fast food cashier asks if you want fries with the burger. The car salesperson tries to sell a more upscale model than was originally requested.

The challenge is if they try to up sell too much, they will lose the sale completely.

Recently I went to a store to make a purchase and the salesperson was so determined to sell me something more expensive that it turned me off completely (and I ended up making the purchase online instead). It was fine with him trying to recommend something more expensive but when I told him I knew what I wanted and he kept pushing, it crossed the line and I moved on.

When the customer knows what he wants, be willing to provide that. It’s ok to try to up sell a bit but don’t up sell your way to no sale.
