Are you dependent upon someone else?

Is your business or organization dependent upon someone else for your success?

This could be anything from having a marketing agency where 90% of your business is from one client to being solely dependent upon one search engine for all of your business.

What happens if that one client goes out of business or decides to use a different marketing agency?

What happens if the search engines algorithms change and you lose all of your traffic?

Do whatever you can to diversify your business so you aren’t dependent upon any one person, company or organization.

Control

Some people feel they have power based on their ability to control a situation.

They control the seating chart for a dinner party so they have power
They control the content going on a web site so they have power
They control the theme of an event so they have power

The question one must ask is “is this really power?”

The other question is “does anyone really care?”

Some things it truly is important to control (I was the best doctor possible to control the situation when surgery is needed) but for many things that people fight for control over, in the long run, NO ONE CARES.

Making products or services smaller

One way to increase your offerings might be to offer smaller services or products.

As an example, an architect might have a design for a great 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home with a 2 car detached garage. While this might be an ideal home for some the person who doesn’t want/need a garage will not be interested. This architect could also offer the same home without the garage and also the garage without the home. For virtually no additional work 1 product became 3

An example with websites might be a website with a scheduling module. The developer of this site might offer the scheduling module as an “a la carte” offering for others to purchase to add on to their own sites

Think about ways you can break some of your products or services down to offer smaller versions as an alternative. The challenge is to make sure your smaller offerings don’t cannibalize your sales of your bigger products in a way that adversely affects your bottom line.

Opportunity with risk

You are offered an opportunity to do one of two things:

Be hired to turn around a company for a very reasonable salary
Be the person running the company that you now are a part owner of BUT where you either receive a very low or no salary at all

If you choose the first option you have guaranteed income for a given period of time. If you choose the second option you might have to make some sacrifices due to the low income and know you might end up with nothing but also have the potential to make a great deal of money if things work out.

There isn’t a right or wrong answer and there is a different answer for different people but it is important to know yourself and to know how you respond to these type of situations (and it’s important to understand that each situation is different based on the amount of risk and the amount of reward).

It’s not uncommon for some people to wish they could benefit from ownership but when given the opportunity to take that choice they always choose the safe option. This doesn’t make them a better or worse person but at some point they would need to realize where they belong.

Order matters

The order you do things does matter. It’s not good enough to get everything done, it’s frequently important to get the things done in a proper order.

As an example, if your ToDo list includes the following:

Create marketing plan
Create web site
Develop long term goals

It would be important to go in the order of:

Develop long term goals
Create marketing plan
Create web site

If you change the order and create the web site first it will end up being counter productive as it wont necessary reflect the objectives of the long term goal and the marketing plan.

Sometimes the order doesn’t matter but in many cases it does and when it does, make sure everyone realizes this is the case.

Different value for different people

It’s easy to think that everything has a certain value. The thing to remember is frequently the value of things are dependent upon who is involved and their given situation.

As an example, Albert Pujols (star baseball player for the St Louis Cardinals) is currently a free agent. His next contract is supposedly going to be in the 10 year range for around 220 million dollars. The question isn’t “is he worth it?” but rather “is he worth it for a specific team?”. One article I read brought up the point that he might NOT be worth it for the Cardinals to keep him at that price (he will be 42 years old when the contract expires) but a team like the Miami Marlins, who need short term success and a big name to draw people to their games) will need someone like Pujols. In other words, he might not be worth it for one team but well worth it for a different team.

This is a valuable lesson to keep in mind when looking at somethings value. It’s not whether it’s a good price or a bad price but rather is it a good price for your specific situation.

Monopolizing opportunities

There is no way to monopolize the money.

There is no way to monopolize the market (or at least it would be very, very difficult)

There is no way to monopolize the talent.

One thing you can try to do though is to monopolize the opportunities.

What if you could establish yourself as THE expert in a certain field? People want access to THE expert (note the THE and not just an expert) to see if their idea makes sense, will work and is worth trying. THE expert has access to many of the opportunities that are out there and can choose which to be involved with, which to watch and which to ignore.

If you can become THE expert in a given field, you will have access to many, if not all of the opportunities that are out there and this will allow you to determine keep the lead in many aspects of the field.

The best or the best you can be?

Many people want to be the best. The problem with striving to be the best is it’s relative to others. You can be the best of a weak group and still be weak. Or, you can try to be the best but be competing with a true superstar and end up feeling like a failure.

Rather than trying to be the best (and being able to say “we are number 1″), why not try to be the best you can be? If you strive to be the best you can be, and really work to accomplish this as a goal, you will be successful (based on what you are trying to accomplish).

Compare yourself to your capabilities and not to others and you might be surprised by what you can accomplish

Shortest distance vs best way

People like to take the shortest distance to get from Point A to Point B. While this might seem logical if they don’t know all of the variables, the shortest distance might be the logical way to go but, as an example, if there is a lake or mountain in the way, a different route might be the better way to go.

While this is true for navigational directions it is also true in many other aspects of life as well.

Make sure you are looking for the best way to go and not just the shortest. You might be surprised how much effective this might be.

Get on the same page

Two people attend a meeting. Each has a different agenda for the meeting. It’s very rare anything positive will come out of that meeting.

It’s not a case of everyone having to agree on everything but rather, at the very least, make sure they are on the same page regarding the agenda.

Otherwise, it’s just people wasting each others time.
