Non-profits

Recently I saw a comment on a forum or blog (sadly I didn’t pay attention to where I first saw it) which said “A non-profit that isn’t run like a business is a hobby using other people’s money”.

There are many GREAT non-profit organizations out there (one of my favorites is heifer.org) that are doing wonderful work and really making the world a better place. Unfortunately there are also a fair number of others more interested in paying for someone’s hobby.

Make sure you don’t look at all non-profits the same way. Some are truly looking to change the world (for the better). Others…not so much

Just something to think about.

Networking vs Relationship Building

People spend a lot of time, money and thought on networking to build their business. They want to meet as many people as they can, they want to meet the “right people” and then use those connections to help their business.

The problem with this strategy is while they might be meeting a lot of people they aren’t taking the time to develop these relationships.

People don’t want to do business with someone they barely know. People want to do business with people they know well, they want to do business with people they like, they want to do business with people they trust.

Rather than trying to meet as many people as possible, take the time to develop a real relationship with a few people. You might be surprised how well it works.

Get organized and put yourself out there

A person wanted to launch a new business. He made a small attempt at a few different marketing techniques and then he found someone who made him sit down, get organized, make a plan and get his business marketed properly.

Before getting organized he spent a full year and a lot of money trying to figure things out and wasted most of the year and most of the money.

Once organized he was able to implement the marketing plan and in a short period time have a profitable ongoing business.

Because this person was so intent on getting started he wasted a lot of time and money but when he slowed down and created a plan he was up and running successfully much quicker.

In many cases your options are to rush and waste time or plan and long term be successful faster

Law of Attraction

Everyone is so negative around here.

No one is motivated.

People aren’t creative anymore.

No one takes chances around here.

If you find yourself saying any of the above or something similar consider the Law of Attraction.

If you want to be around people who are positive, be positive.

If you want to be around motivated people, be motivated.

If you want to be around creative people, be creative.

If you want to be around risk takers, take chances.

People of like interests tend to gravitate toward each other so if you aren’t around the type of people you want to be around, don’t change them, change yourself.

Just something to think about.

Waiting for respect

If you are waiting for people to give you respect you will be waiting a long time.

If you want respect go out and earn it.

Otherwise, you will keep waiting forever.

Don’t assume everyone knows

I was asked to look at a web site for a business colleague and in looking at the site it gave all of the information you could ever want about how to use a CRM.

The problem is, it never let the visitors know what CRM was!

It assumed that everyone knows that CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management and if all of their visitors did know that is what CRM means then it would be fine. The problem is they are not the industry leader and as such have a very limited advertising budget and can’t afford to miss out on opportunities that might be out there.

Don’t assume everyone knows the terminology that you might consider to be common for all. Define your terms, explain when possible and educate where needed. It really will make a difference.

What is your story

Recently I bought a few things from alchemy.com. I liked their products and loved their story. They use use the inner tubing from bicycle tires for the main part of their products and the straps are from the seat belts of cars. They are a great example of a company that upcycles.

I also bought some business cards from rebinder.com. Their belief is “products should be made in our country, with out workers, out of responsible materials with the intention that no landfill be required”. They write about their beliefs, they live their beliefs and they are their beliefs.

Whether you like these type of products or not is irrelevant. The thing that both of these organizations do is they sell their story. If you buy from them you are buying more than just their products, you are also buying their story.

What is your story? Are you doing a good job of selling that?

Just something to think about.

Does your superstar cover up too many deficiencies?

Having a superstar on your team can be wonderful. However, keep in mind that a superstar can hide a lot of deficiencies of the team which can end up hurting a team long term.

In volleyball, a setter makes a perfect set to the superstar outside hitter who spikes the ball for an easy kill. Later on, the same setter makes a mediocre set to the same superstar and because of this players talent, she is still able to spike the ball for the winner. Do this enough time and the setter realizes she no longer has to make the perfect set. The problem is that the next year the superstar graduates and the mediocre set to the good but not great hitter and this player can’t make up for the mediocre set and hits the ball into the net. The superstar had hidden the setting deficiencies and in fact enables them to continue since it had worked for so long.

The superstar salesperson might be able to sell despite inadequate marketing materials. The problem is, when the superstar leaves, others can’t offset these bad materials and sales go down dramatically.

The doctors office receptionist might have bad phone etiquette but if one of the doctors is so good that people will tolerate it, everything works until that doctor retires and is replaced by a competent doctor who can do a good job but people wont give them a chance because now the receptionists phone etiquette matters.

If you have a superstar in your organization make sure you don’t allow their talents to cover up too many deficiencies. Short term it’s great but long term it might have a major impact on your organization.

Just something to think about.

Marketing

People spend a great deal of money trying to acquire new customers.

Others realize their current customers are more valuable than new customers so spend their time and money keeping their current customers happy.

Another way to look at marketing is to market to your current customers to have them refer new customers. The main way this is done is by providing good service to these current customers but you can also incentivize them. With some companies they will offer a commission or affiliate program for referrals. Others will provide a discount to current customers who refer new customers.

One thing to keep in mind a non compensated referral is worth a great deal more than a compensated referral (simply meaning, if someone knows you are paying people to refer customers to your business it’s not as valuable as if they know these referrals are being provided simply because it’s what they truly believe.

Keeping current customers is extremely valuable. Getting New customers is valuable. Getting new customers from current customers can take your business to a whole new level.

Just something to think about.

Have a great day!

I’m happy if you are happy

There are times when you wont necessarily agree with what makes others happy. You can try to change them or you can try to learn to like what they like.

Another option is simply to be happy just because they are happy.

Be willing to accept people for what they are, don’t try to change them and be happy for them.

It’s not too complicated but will make everyone happier.

Have a great day!
