OPO’s

People frequently take the other peoples opinions very seriously.

When they looks to buy something online, they read the reviews to help them make an educated opinion.

As an example, on a scale of 1-5, a hotel might be given a 2 by a visitor. This might seem like a bad rating however as soon as you find out the reason for the ratings, it might change your feelings dramatically. The 2 might have been given because the hotel wasn’t convenient to shopping. For that visitor, it might make the hotel inadequate but if you are more interested in the amenities, than the hotel might be perfect for you.

Another example might be to ask me my opinion on a certain book. I might rate it very poorly because it was fiction and I don’t like fiction however, if you like fiction, it might be a great book.

Taking the opinions of others is dangerous unless you know their logic behind their opinions. Too often, we forget about this when reading reviews and ratings online

Find a way to make something work

It’s easy to find reasons something won’t work. Successful people find ways to make things work.

Go figure out how to make something work today!

Taking chances

It’s easy to take chances when you aren’t risking anything personally. The challenge is to take chances when you could lose it all.

Until you have everything at stake you don’t know how you would make a decision with everything at stake. It’s easy to assume you know how you will respond with the real pressure but for most, it’s just a theoretical concept

Think big

People with goals who work hard and smart to achieve them frequently are successful.

Knowing this, doesn’t it make sense to have big goals rather than just small ones?

Think big, work toward big and achieve big things

Think small and achieve small.

It’s your choice

I don’t care how a garbage disposal works

I don’t care how the garbage disposal works

If my garbage disposal is broken, I don’t care how it works, or what it takes to fix it, I just want it fixed. Too often people care more about explaining why something doesn’t work or why something else is better when the reality is, most people just want it fixed.

It’s nice a to know how to avoid the problem in the future but sometimes details are more than most people want.

It’s the same way with driving a car. When you press the gas pedal people want the car to go. They don’t care what causes the car to go, They just want it to go.

Give people the information they want and need but a don’t waste their time with unnecessary information.

The problem with being a bully

The problem with being a bully is there is always someone bigger, stronger and faster and bullies tend to not be prepared for someone who doesn’t back down.

If you are accustomed to bullying others make sure you are prepared for the person who doesn’t back down. If you aren’t prepared you might be in for a surprise.

Time and Place

Sometimes people say things and we think “did he really say that?”

The thing to remember is there is a time and place were certain things might be appropriate and those same things, at other times and other places they might be completely inappropriate.

The things one might say to a good friend might come off as funny and friendly but when said in a business setting might be considered rude and mean.

Make sure, when you say something you take into consideration the time and place you are saying it and then decide if you still want to say it.

Loyalty

Don’t be loyal with the hope the other side will be loyal to you.

Be loyal because you think it’s the right thing to do.

This would be a case of controlling what is within your control (your loyalty) and not worrying about things outside of your control.

Would you have stopped?

The other day I was walking across the street and slipped on some ice. I fell backwards landing on my back and butt. I was able to get across the street slowly before sitting back down because of the pain.

The reason I’m writing this is not give medical updates but rather because something that keeps going through my mind is “why didn’t any of the drivers who saw me fall stop to see if I was ok?”

One driver had to slow down to make sure not to run me over but when I was able to get out of the road, they continued driving on.

It’s easy to think “if I were in their position, I would have stopped to make sure they were ok” but my guess is if you asked the people who did see my fall this question as a hypothetical they would have said they would stop as well.

If you saw someone fall while crossing the street in the middle of the day, would you stop to make sure they were ok? If you answered “yes” to that question, the real question is “would you really or just in the hypothetical?”

Do we sometimes take greatness for granted?

We tend to celebrate going from bad to good.

We make a big deal for those who go from good to great.

We tend to ignore those who are consistently great and take them for granted.

The company that comes out with a new product (that may or may not work) gets great fanfare. The company whose product has been successful for years (and will continue to be so) gets ignored.

Maintaining a high level is as difficult, if not more difficult, than getting to the high level in the first place. When you see a person or group that is able to maintain that high level on a consistent basis, take the time to acknowledge them, it’s a lot harder than we all think
