Short term vs Long term

When an opportunity arises do you look for the short term win or the long term benefit?

The people who look short term might have the advantage in the beginning but the people who take the time to develop the long term relationships will more likely win over the long term.

Group

Wouldn’t it be great to have a group of your peers gather on a regular basis to brainstorm, share ideas, collaborate with and overall work together to make your job/career/life better?

Have you looked to see if this group might already exist for you to join?

If the group doesn’t exist, have you considered trying to form one yourself? Just think, if this is something you think would help, others might feel the same way.

You might be surprised what you can accomplish if you take the chance to join or form such a group.

Give it a try someday

Ask a question

Ask a question and get an answer

Explore the options and get a solution

Too often, we simply ask a question, get the answer and move on but don’t take the time to truly explore the best options to get a true solution

Don’t just settle for an answer next time

D.O.C.

Do
Observe
Correct

Take action, go ahead and do it

Observer and evaluate what went wrong and what was right

Correct what went wrong and repeat the process.

Too often, people spend so much time planning, preparing, plotting, discussing etc that they never get around to the doing.

Use the D.O.C. Process and see how much you can get done

Talktonoone

Talktonoone is when you talk so much that everyone starts to ignore you. You keep talking and no one listens.

Once inflicted with talktonoone, it’s difficult to overcome because people wont give you the opportunity to prove you have changed.

We all know people inflicted with talktonoone. The only thing worse than having talktonoone is when you have it and aren’t aware.

If you find yourself dominating a conversation or talking constantly, give some thought to whether you have talktonoone. With work, it can be cured.

Talktonoone is not a real word but it sure does inflict a lot of people.

Be careful what you write

Be careful what you write

It’s so easy for people to forget that just because you write something to a specific person doesn’t mean it won’t be shared with others

Once you write something you have to assume it’s going to be available to everyone.

To see how a text message sent to one person can get out to millions of people see the interview at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDG02q2rx9A&sns=em%22%3E

In this interview a text meant for one person ended up being discussed on international tv and in front of a large stadium crowd. While it’s easy to watch the interview and laugh, it’s also a great reminder of how a written message can spread even if the writer doesn’t intend for that to happen

It’s about quality

I received a phone call from a friend yesterday. Although I know a good number of people, there are very few I would consider real friends.

I speak with this friend only a couple of times a year and even then, only for short periods of time. The reasons for not speaking more often range from time conflicts (different time zones), language conflicts (English is not her first language and speaking on the phone is much more difficult than in person for both of us to understand the other) and just too many things to do.

The thing I realize each time I speak with her is while we don’t speak often or much, when we do speak, it’s true quality.

Given the opportunity to speak with more people (quantity) or to speak more with people I truly care about, it’s a no brainer which choice to make.

Go out and spend more quality time with individuals you care about and if it means spending less time with others, that is ok

Maybe it’s you

If you find yourself replacing employees regularly because they aren’t getting the job done, there comes a point where you need to ask yourself whether it’s possible it’s not all their fault and instead, maybe it’s you who isn’t doing the job.

Rather than bringing new people in to improve your staff, should you consider managing your staff better and helping them improve instead?

Remember, when you start thinking it’s everyone else who are the problem, it frequently means the problem is you

Because we always have

How many things did you do yesterday simply because they were things you have always done?

How many times did you do things a certain way because that was the way you have always done them?

Before you do things today, make sure there is a good reason for doing them and not just because it’s what you have always done.

You might be surprised by what you discover

High reward no risk

People would love opportunities that have high rewards and no risk.

The truth is those opportunities rarely exist.

The more some people have the more they want but as they accumulate things, the less they want to risk.

This is the reason some underfunded start ups are so willing to take chances since they have very little to risk however, as they grow, they are wiling to risk less

If you are wanting the big payoff you must be wiling to take the personal risk as well

Have a great day!
