Be careful what you wish for

Be careful what you hope for. Many organizations hope for a lot more business…but they aren’t prepared to deal with it.

Realtors might hope for many more leads…but they don’t have the time or man power to service them properly.

Coaches might hope for greater success…but they aren’t prepared for the pressure that comes with it.

Remember, the grass is not always greener elsewhere. More customers mean more work. More sales mean more supplies needed.

More is not always better.

Be careful what you hope for…you just might get it

Apples to Apples

I was speaking with a client recently who lost out on a bid for a new customer. His industry has pretty straight forward pricing so, for the most part, the only variation on pricing between competitors is in the profit margin. The industry standard is 10% so to offer a lower price than a competitor it means reducing this profit margin. Most often, the decision by the customers is made based on timing, customer service etc.

This client lost this potential customer to a competitor who bid 28% less. He knew there was no way to match this bid without losing money so he just accepted the loss of the potential customer and moved on. A few days later, he received a call from the lost customer complaining about the competitor. It ends up the reason for the lower bid is they weren’t offering the same services.

Make sure when you are looking at various options you are comparing apples to apples and not apples to oranges.

Also, make sure you make it as easy for your customers and clients to make an informed decision making proper comparisons.

Forward or Backward

Do you look backward to see what you have accomplished?

Do you look forward to see what you will get done?

These two might seem quite similar but the difference in mindset is enormous

Options

The two options people talk about are:

Do you want to be a big fish in a small pond?
Do you want to be a small fish in a big pond?

Why don’t they ever consider expanding the size of their current pond?

Just a thought

Good or Great

People who are good at something tend to follow directions.

People who are great at something are the ones who write the directions and then deviate from the directions.

As an example, the good cook can follow the recipe exactly. The great chef writes the cookbook but will add a dash of this and a touch of that to make it even better.

Are you the person following the directions or the person creating them?

Just something to think about

Do you control your name online?

If a person goes to a search engine and enter your name, what do you find?

Do they find you and your activities or do they find someone else?

Do they find false information or true information?

If you can’t find yourself, or you find information you don’t want people to see, consider working on controlling your name online. This can be done with a domain name, a blog, a lot of posts or other methods.

Before you decide how to do it, consider finding out what people find when they search for your name.

If you don’t control your name online, the next question is should you? There isn’t a right or wrong answer but if you should, then you better start now because if you don’t, someone else might

Problems vs Solutions

Do you look for problems or do you look for solutions?

The person who looks for problems creates work. The person who looks for solutions creates success

Which do you look for?

Think Globally

It’s easy to think what happens locally is all that matters. You might sell locally, buy locally, live locally (local is a relative term, it might mean your town, your district, your region, your country etc) but things happening in different parts of the world are going to affect you in some way.

The cost of energy does (or will) be affected by what is happening in Asia and Africa. The cost of food will be affected by demand elsewhere.

Many of us live in our own cocoon and only think about our direct contacts but our lives are influenced and will continue to be influenced by actions from all over the world.

We can continue to live in our own little worlds or be prepared for both the positives and negatives by realizing what is happening all over the world

Be proactive and be prepared or be reactive and hope for the best

Flash of Genius

Throughout our lives we tend to have the occasional flash of genius. We have an idea that could change the world. We have an idea that could make a fortune. We have an idea that can save lives.

Most of us do nothing with these ideas.

A few take these ideas and do something special.

What do you do with your flashes of genius?

Have a great day!
