10-0-9-2 or 5-5-5-5

If your performance is graded on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the best would you rather receive scores of 10-0-9-2 or 5-5-5-5?

The first option shows you can do great things but in trying to do so occasionally fail. The second option means you are consistently…ok

There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this however, it’s important to know which category you fall into. Many people claim to be in one category but when you look at their body of work, they are actually in the other.

Social Networking

When people talk about “social networking” they usually are referring to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc.

What about the more traditional form of social networking?

What about inviting a mix of friends, business associates and acquaintances over for a cookout?

What about introducing various clients to each other so they can benefit from each other?

What about inviting various business contacts over for informal brainstorming?

What about organizing a small group to meet at a local art gallery and then go for drinks somewhere?

I realize this type of social networking wont tell you that “John is going to the john and will be right back” and some might see this as old school but it’s still what works.

Social networking can be done in many ways that even those uncomfortable with technology can benefit from

Mavericks

Frequently, we speak about leaders and followers. There tends to be an assumption that people will fall into one of these two groups. The reality is many people might be leaders in one group or environment and followers in other groups or environments.

However, there is also a third group which often gets ignored. These would be the mavericks. They don’t follow others and, for the most part, don’t care if others follow them or not.

Some might see these mavericks as selfish (always doing things there way without regard for others) but when we look back in history, so many of our great innovators would fall into this category.

When looking at innovations in technology, we frequently see some of the most successful innovations being done by start up while the companies who throw a lot of money and people at research and development don’t create much which would be considered innovative or creative.

If you truly want growth and innovation, you might want to consider finding some mavericks but do understand, they can be a handful. The key is to let them do what they do best without inhibiting them with procedures and restrictions. If you can do this without wanting to kill yourself or the maverick, and are able to be patient, you might be on the way to something great.

If you want safe and stable, keep doing what most people are doing but realize, the chances of great are limited this way.

Focus on your issues

How often do you hear people complaining about things outside of their control?

They can’t stand their bosses decision about something

They can’t stand a politicians beliefs.

They can’t believe their team lost last night.

They can’t believe how bad the weather has been.

While worrying about all of these things outside of their control, they forget to concentrate on their own issues and on the things they can control.

They let these outside issues affect their ability (or inability) to control their own issues.

Focus on your own issues, you will find much more gets accomplished!

Answer yourself honestly

Recently, I have had some discussions with a few people who were struggling with decisions. As an example, one person, who was looking for new employment, couldn’t give an honest answer to himself about what he wanted to do.

When I asked what type of work they were looking for, the response sounded like the type of BS one puts on their objectives on a resume “I want a career in technology that will allow me to grow as a person and make the world a better place” (or some crap like that).

I asked again but this time explained he needed to be able to be specific and honest. The response was more mumbo jumbo.

Finally, I asked him why he needed new employment he responded “I was laid off and need work soon in order to pay my mortgage and since I specialize in database programming, I’m looking for a job in that field”.

With that response, it became much easier to work with the person.

The problem wasn’t that he couldn’t be honest in his answer to me. The problem was, he was struggling with being honest to himself.

When a problem arises before you can work to solve it, be honest and open with yourself to determine what the real problem is and it will be much easier to fix

Talk about stuff

The next time you are around a group of people take a moment to listen to what they are talking about.

Many people talk about:

houses
cars
jobs
boats
investments
material goods

More should be talking about:

happiness
fulfillment
helping others
charity
friendship

Think about your conversations with others…what are they about?

People are smart

People, on average, are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

The reason people fail at tasks is we don’t allow them the opportunity to learn how to think.

Either we put them into situations they are completely unprepared for and they get overwhelmed so shut down and accomplish nothing or, we treat them as if they are incapable of decision making so make all decisions for them and then when they are put in a position to make a decision, they aren’t prepared.

If you tell someone exactly what to do in a given situation, they most likely will be able to handle that same situation in the future. However, if they encounter a similar but different situation, they wont be able to deduce how the other solution was arrived at previously so wont be able to replicate the thought process going forward.

The alternative is to teach the methodology used to arrive at the solution and whether they see the same problem or a different problem, they will understand how to sold this problem in the future.

It’s much easier, short term, to problem solve for others but long term, everyone benefits and grows by teaching the problem solving method to them

Personal Retreat

It’s not uncommon for organizations to have retreats for their employees (frequently management) in order to do team building, long term planning, goal setting and relaxing.

The question to consider is do you ever go on a personal retreat?

Do you ever set time for yourself to relax, to plan, to plot, to think?

It’s easy to say “I don’t have time” or “I’m too busy to do that””. I would argue if you did this occasionally, you would have more time due to better planning and being more relaxed.

When you get a chance, schedule a personal retreat for yourself

Core Values

People change.

People evolve

The one thing that stays the same is their core values. When evaluating others, don’t let the small things influence you too much, evaluate their core values to find out who they really are
